Plenary preparations. Political groups will prepare for the 9-12 May plenary session in Strasbourg, where MEPs are to debate the new migration and asylum reform package to be presented by Commission and preparations for the World Humanitarian Summit. The EP will also vote on draft laws giving Europol new powers to fight terrorism and making residence/entry permits easier to obtain for au pairing and students from third countries. Members will also vote recommendations on how to protect women who are victims of human trafficking, improve existing rules on parental leave and help the development of EU mountain regions.
2016 Charlemagne Youth Prize. The Charlemagne Youth Prize 2016 will be awarded on 3 May in Aachen. The prize rewards young people aged between 16 and 30 who have been involved in projects that help promote better understanding between the peoples of different European countries. The award ceremony will take place in the presence of EP President Martin Schulz, who will deliver a keynote speech, and former President Hans-Gert Pöttering.
2016 Charlemagne Prize to go to Pope Francis. Parliament’s President Martin Schulz will take part in a debate on the future of the EU with European Council President Donald Tusk, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and President of the Italian Council of Ministers Matteo Renzi, in Rome on Thursday. He will also deliver a joint laudatio with Messrs Tusk and Juncker at a ceremony awarding the 2016 Charlemagne Prize to His Holiness Pope Francis and hold a press conference with Mr Juncker, in Rome on Friday.
Transparency register/lobbyists. The ongoing public consultation on the Parliament and Commission joint Transparency Register for lobbyists and interest groups, their role in policy-making and transparency in EU decision-making will be debated at a conference with EP Vice-President Sylvie Guillaume, Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans and several other experts. President’s diary. EP President Schulz will meet China National People´s Congress Standing Committee Vice-Chairman Qiangba Puncog and European Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly, on Tuesday in Brussels.
