The 11th plenary session of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EuroLat), held in Vienna, finished with twelve reports approved and an intense political debate on Venezuela.

The humanitarian crisis resulting from the massive emigration of more than two million Venezuelan citizens and the next elections in Brazil following the ruling of the Brazilian Supreme Court were central to the political discussions between deputies, held in Vienna during the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

At the opening of the plenary and the subsequent press conference, the two co-presidents of the Assembly, Ramón Jáuregui (S&D, Spain) and Elías Castillo (Panama), noted their great concern for a changing world, with growing threats to peace, security and multilateralism.

They highlighted the urgent need to end corruption and organised crime, as well as the need to find solutions to the displacement of thousands of people and the effects of climate change. In addition, in their speeches both presidents emphasised the importance and necessity of dialogue and cooperation in order to face these great geopolitical and economic challenges.

To respond to these problems, the deputies of both continents approved twelve reports. These reports address issues related to the restructuring of sovereign debt, aviation and aviation security, forced disappearance of minors in the European Union and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the fight against inequality through social cohesion policies and the governance of globalisation.

Other topics of the debate include digital platforms in the modern economy, the importance of culture in relations between the EU and the Latin American and Carribean countries and the challenges involved in guaranteeing the right to water.

Benita Ferrero-Waldner, president of the Euroamerica Foundation and former European Commissioner for External Relations, and Paola Amedei, executive director of the European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean Foundation took part in the closing session.
