Il 9 luglio, il Parlamento e i paesi UE hanno avviato i negoziati sul bilancio del prossimo esercizio. I deputati al Parlamento europeo (DPE) insistono sul fatto che il bilancio deve sostenere la crescita e l'occupazione, ammonendo i governi UE a non effettuare tagli inutili, pregiudicando quindi gli investimenti che potrebbero aiutare l'UE ad uscire dalla crisi. I negoziati dovrebbero durare per tutto l'autunno.
Il Parlamento decide in merito al bilancio su piede di parità con i paesi UE, il che significa che esso non può essere adottato senza il consenso dei DPE.
