Organised by the Constitutional Affairs Committee, co-authors Dr. Mario MENDEZ and Dr. Fernando MENDEZ will present a study on "Referendums on EU issues" which analyses the political and legal dynamics behind referendums on EU-related issues. Such referendums have long been a risky endeavour, especially in the wake of the economic crisis, with its negative ramifications on public opinion in the EU. Two other experts, invited by the committee, will further comment on a number of recent trends in referenda and reflect on their impact on EU governance.

Organised by the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee, in the framework of the own-initiative report by Ana GOMES (S&D, PT), this hearing will address the implications of big data on fundamental rights, both as regards the use of big data for commercial activities or for public administration or law enforcement purposes. The guest speakers will provide the committee with the views of different actors involved: consumers, NGOs, public administration, law enforcement and data protection authorities so as to obtain a broad and representative picture of this specific but essential question.
The hearing is divided into two sessions. The first (15.05-16.20) will discuss the commercial use of big data and the second (16.20-17.25) will focus on the public sector and law enforcement of big data.
