MEPs call for high-level EU human rights envoy

The Foreign Affairs committee called on the Council on Thursday to appoint a high-level envoy with an international reputation, tasked with raising the EU's human rights profile worldwide, to the new post of EU Special Representative for Human Rights created in line with the EP's repeated demands.

Human rights: Azerbaijan and return of North Korean refugees

All actions aimed at suppressing the freedom of expression and assembly in Azerbaijan should stop immediately, says a resolution adopted by the European Parliament on Thursday. Azerbaijan's hosting of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in its capital Baku on 26 May should be an opportunity for it to show its commitment to democracy and human rights, it adds. In a separate resolution, also passed on Thursday, Parliament calls on China to stop deporting North Korean refugees back to North Korea.

The European Parliament's current President, Jerzy Buzek, is soon to hand over the reins to his successor, who will be chosen by the full body of MEPs at the Strasbourg plenary session in January 2012. This mid-way point between the European elections of 2009 and 2014 gives an opportunity to review some of the main legislation adopted by MEPs over the last two and a half years.

'Europe on the Ground' wint de Karel de Grote-prijs voor jongeren 2012 Jeugd − Nederland - 16-05-2012 - 10:17

'Europe on the Ground', een Grieks jongeren-mediaproject heeft de eerste prijs gewonnen bij de Karel de Grote-prijs voor jongeren 2012 ceremonie op 15 mei in Aken. De tweede prijs ging naar Europe Meets School, een Tsjechisch uitwisselingsprogramma voor Erasmusstudenten. De derde prijs ging naar Cycle Me Home, een Hongaarse road-movie documentaire. De prijs wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt aan projecten die het bewustzijn van de Europese identiteit en integratie onder jonge Europeanen bevorderen.

Europe on the Ground wint de Europese Karel de Grote-prijs voor jongeren ! Jeugd − België - 15-05-2012 - 16:45

Europe on the Ground, een Grieks mediaproject voor jongeren, heeft op 15 mei 2012 de eerste prijs ontvangen op de uitreiking van de Karel de Grote-prijs in Aken. De tweede prijs ging naar Europe Meets School, een uitwisselingsprogramma voor Erasmusstudenten (Tsjechië) en de winnaar van de derde prijs was het Cycle Me Home project, een reisdocumentaire (Hongarije). De prijs wordt elk jaar toegekend aan projecten die een gedeelde Europese identiteit en de integratie onder jongeren stimuleren.

Esplanade Solidarnosc, ontmoetingsplaats tussen de stad, de burgers en de EU Instellingen − België - 02-05-2012 - 10:27

Vandaag ondertekenden het Europees Parlement, het Gewest en de lokale autoriteiten een Protocol dat de aanvraagprocedures regelt voor de organisatie van culturele en feestelijke activiteiten die de Europese gedachte stimuleren, op de Esplanade Solidarnosc 1980. Dit is de publieke ruimte voor het Europees Parlement in Brussel en toegangspoort tot de Europese wijk en de andere instellingen.
