The European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) must focus on currently underfunded areas, so as to complement, not duplicate, other EU budget tools, said MEPs at Monday’s expert hearing on the Juncker investment plan proposals. The hearing was held by the Budgets and Economic and Monetary Affairs committees with a view to shaping legislation for the investment plan. Frauen und Mädchen durch Bildung stärken - So lautet das Thema des EU-Parlaments zum Weltfrauentag (8.3.). Mit 315 Milliarden Euro soll das Wirtschaftswachstum in Europa gefördert werden. Der Investitionsplan von Kommissionspräsident Jean-Claude Juncker steht im Fokus diese Woche (2.-5.3.). Pierre Krähenbühl, der Generalkommissar des Hilfswerks der Vereinten Nationen für Palästina-Flüchtlinge im Nahen Osten (UNRWA), ist zu Gast im Ausschuss für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten und die Abgeordneten bereiten sich auf das Plenum in der kommenden Woche sowie den Weltfrauentag am Sonntag (8.3.) vor. Die Maschrik-Delegation und der Menschenrechtsausschuss hatten für Mittwoch (26.2.) eine Anhörung zur Religionsfreiheit im Nahen Osten organisiert. Die spanische Vorsitzende des Menschenrechtsausschusses Elena Valenciano (S&D) leitete die Anhörung über die Notlage der Christen und anderer religiöser Minderheiten. Der Umweltausschuss hat am Dienstag (24.2.) eine Reform des Emissionshandels verabschiedet. Der Emissionshandel wurde eingeführt, um die Emissionen zu senken und den Klimawandel zu bekämpfen. Da zurzeit zu viele Emissionszertifikate auf dem Markt sind, haben Firmen keinen Anreiz, ihre Emissionen zu reduzieren. 42 Personen und Organisationen aus 19 EU-Ländern sind am Mittwoch (25.2.) in Brüssel mit dem Europäischen Bürgerpreis geehrt worden. Seit 2008 zeichnet das Europäische Parlament Bürger für außergewöhnliche Leistungen aus. In diesem Jahr wurde der Preis unter anderem für ihren Einsatz für die Rechte benachteiligter Menschen, den Kampf gegen Extremismus sowie die Förderung von Toleranz und Dialog vergeben. Ungefähr 3000 Arbeitnehmer in Belgien, Deutschland und Polen, die im Zeitraum 2013-2014 ihren Job verloren haben, sollen bei der Suche nach einer neuen Anstellung mit 6,3 Millionen Euro von der EU unterstützt werden, laut einer am Donnerstag angenommenen Empfehlung des Haushaltsausschusses. Die Hilfen aus dem Europäischen Fonds für die Anpassung an die Globalisierung (EGF) müssen noch vom Plenum und dem Rat der EU gebilligt werden. Next year’s EU budget priorities should be fostering growth by helping employment, enterprises and entrepreneurship, showing solidarity both within the EU and with countries outside it and putting EU finances in order by tackling the overdue payments backlog and reforming the EU revenue system, say Budgets Committee MEPs in a resolution voted on Thursday. Parliament’s newly-established Special Committee on Tax Rulings elected Alain Lamassoure (EPP, FR) as its chair at its constituent meeting on Thursday morning. As vice-chairs, the committee elected Bernd Lucke (ECR, DE), Marisa Matias (GUE/NGL, PT) and Eva Joly (Greens/EFA, FR). Rapporteurs will be appointed on 9 March.
