Newsroom

The European Parliament is in session from 26 to 27 April 2017

Common EU-wide social rights, as proposed by the European Commission, the “European Pillar of Social Rights”, should be pegged at the highest level and not lead to a “race to the bottom”, MEPs stressed in a debate on Wednesday. (Read more: European Pillar of Social Rights: call for highest possible common standards )

Europe is not closing the door to Turkey, but recent developments prompt it to look for alternatives to Turkey’s accession to the EU, said MEPs in a debate with Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn on Wednesday. (Read more: MEPs advocate reviewing EU - Turkey relations and suspending EU accession talks )

Political group leaders and MEPs gave their views on Hungary’s new education law, perceived as targeting the Central European University, the tightening of rules for NGOs and asylum seekers and a government survey entitled “National Consultation - Let’s stop Brussels!”. (Read more: MEPs discuss situation in Hungary with Prime Minister Orbán )

President Tajani highlighted the international “Girls in ICT” Day, to be held on Thursday. This aims to encourage young women to study and take up careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. (Read more: Opening – European Parliament President highlights ‘Girls in ICT’ Day )

Press releases (second part)

The outcome of Turkey’s referendum, expanding presidential powers, will be debated with EU enlargement commissioner Johannes Hahn on Wednesday at around 17.30. (Read more: Fate of EU - Turkey relations to be debated Wednesday )

The labour market has drastically changed in recent years due in part to the digital economy, leading to more temporary jobs and more people being treated as independent contractors. However, the EU is preparing legislation to reinforce workers' rights as part of the European pillar of social rights initiative. The European Commission will present the plans to MEPs on Wednesday 26 April. We asked two MEPs about the best ways to create fair working conditions for employees. (Read more: Employment: MEPs to discuss plans to reinforce workers' rights )

Children are at risk of coming across videos containing violence or hate speech when online. The culture committee proposed several measures to better protect them when it adopted its position on a proposed update of the audiovisual media services directives on 25 April. But do you know how much time children spend online or the best way to protect them from harmful content? Watch our video to find out. (Read more: Safety first: protecting children from watching harmful videos online )

MEPs beefed up rules to ensure that buyers of goods or services from another EU country are treated like local customers in a committee vote on Tuesday. (Read more: E-commerce: ending unjustified geo-blocking across the EU )

Key products and services, like phones, e-book readers, operating systems and payment terminals, will have to be made more accessible to people with disabilities, under draft EU rules amended in committee on Tuesday. (Read more: Products and services to be made more accessible for disabled persons in the EU )

Children should have the same protection whether they are watching TV, a web-shared video or a web-streamed film, said committee MEPs on Tuesday. (Read more: Media services: same rules needed for TV and internet to protect children better )
