The EU is being challenged by a wide range of issues including the economic crisis, unemployment, immigration, globalisation, and various kinds of security concerns. EU-US negotiations on the TTIP free trade agreement are continuing. The deal which is expected to create new jobs and boost economies on both sides of the Atlantic touches upon sensitive issues, not least rules for the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS). On 27 January the international trade and legal affairs committees held a joint public hearing to shed light on the issues at play. He stressed the importance of the plan's three pillars: the fund itself, the project pipeline and the completion of the internal market. (Read more: Juncker plan welcomed by most political groups )

United by energy concerns

Others Energy28-01-2015 - 18:26

The EU is at constant risk of energy supply disruption. Too much energy is wasted and 10% of households in the Union cannot afford proper heating, the Commission vice-president for energy union told Parliament's energy and environment committees this week. Maroš Šefčovič was presenting his vision for an energy union to tackle these and other challenges, and also listened to the priorities and concerns of MEPs. An inter-parliamentary seminar on energy security will be held in Turkey next month. (Read more: United by energy concerns )

During the UN climate talks in Lima before Christmas NGOs, experts and politicians started preparations on a new agreement to be finalised in Paris this coming December. Follow the debate and check out our infographic to find out more about the effect of greenhouse gases. (Read more: Live: plenary debate on roadmap for Paris climate agreement )

The recent attacks in Paris have led member states and EU institutions to re-evaluate their security policy and propose new initiatives to step up the fight against terrorism. This afternoon in plenary MEPs and home affairs commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos debate anti-terrorism measures; including tackling radicalisation, the supply of illegal firearms, the European Agenda on Security for 2015-2020, and EU Passenger Name Record proposals.
