Members of all European Parliament political groups condemned the recent execution of eight people in Indonesia, and called for an immediate moratorium on the death penalty there. In a debate on Thursday with international cooperation Commissioner Neven Mimica, MEPs stressed that even though they respect Indonesia's sovereignty and its fight against drug trafficking, the death penalty can never be justified. The EU should use the Milan Expo 2015 to encourage sustainable agronomic practices, promote fairness in the supply chain, and fight food waste and malnutrition, says a resolution voted by Parliament on Thursday, the eve of the official opening of the event. The ultimate aim of these efforts should be to strengthen global food security, it adds. (Read more: Milan Expo 2015: EU must foster global food security, MEPs say )

The EU should launch a military training mission in Kenya and supply equipment to the Kenyan army and police to help halt the spread of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group, say MEPs on a resolution voted on Tuesday. It should also make it a priority to address the persecution of Christians, they add. This follows Al-Shabaab’s 2 April attack on Kenya’s Garissa University, which killed 147 Christian students and injured 79 others. (Read more: Kenya killings and persecution of Christians )

The massacres perpetrated by the terrorist sect Boko Haram in Nigeria were vehemently condemned by the European Parliament in a vote on Thursday. (Read more: Nigeria: MEPs call for international cooperation to stop Boko Haram )

Political wrangling held back the progress of reform in Albania and Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2014, say MEPs in two separate resolutions voted on Thursday. Both countries need to strengthen their democratic processes, tackle corruption and put in place professional and depoliticised public administrations.
