The priorities of the Italian Council Presidency were outlined to the various parliamentary committees by Italian ministers on 2, 3 and 22 September, following a first series of meetings held on 22 and 23 July. (Read more: Italian Presidency priorities discussed by EP committees )

Parliament should not sign off spending by the European Council and the Council of Ministers for 2012, due to their repeated failure to co-operate with its efforts to check the accounts, the Budgetary Control Committee unanimously advised on Tuesday. But it should clear spending by the Riga-based Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC), whose budget management, procurement and recruitment shortcomings, highlighted in April 2014, have now been corrected, it adds. (Read more: 2012 accounts: EU ministers fail committee test, but telecoms regulators pass )

The situation in Gaza following the August ceasefire agreement, the need to ensure access for humanitarian workers to the strip, its reconstruction and the need for intra-Palestinian reconciliation are expected to top a Foreign Affairs Committee debate with Robert Turner, Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) operations in Gaza on Tuesday. The debate starts at 15:00. (Read more: MEPs to discuss situation in Gaza with UNRWA director )

Economic recovery is losing momentum; European Central Bank President Mario Draghi told the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee on Monday, citing slowing growth in the second quarter and less than encouraging economic indicators in the summer. "The weak credit curb, high unemployment, political and geopolitical tensions could work against the necessary confidence the ECB is trying to build", he explained. (Read more: Economic recovery is slowing, but banks’ confidence in SMEs is up, says Draghi )

Seven nominees for the European Parliament’s 2014 Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought, chosen by political groups and groups of MEPs, will be presented at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Development committees and the Human Rights Subcommittee on 23 September, at 16:15. (Read more: Nominees for Sakharov Prize 2014 announced )

The candidate commissioners as presented by incoming Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, will be scrutinised by the European Parliament committees from 29 September to 7 October. Members will evaluate candidates' suitability before the full house votes on the proposed Commission. The leaders of the political groups have agreed on Thursday on the format and programme for the public hearings. (Read more: Public hearings of commissioners-candidate: format and schedule )

The European Parliament welcomes signs of hope in moves towards peace in Ukraine and in the newly-ratified EU-Ukraine association agreement, but worries about Russia’s real intentions in the undeclared "hybrid war" there. In a resolution adopted on Thursday, it urges the EU to stand up to Russia and step up support for EU farmers hit by its trade ban. (Read more: MEPs welcome signs of hope in Ukraine and urge the EU to stand up to Russia )

The EU must step up its involvement in supporting Libya’s stability and transition to democracy, said the European Parliament in a vote on Thursday. MEPs condemned the growing use of violence there, especially against civilians, and called for a ceasefire between the fighting factions. They also said humanitarian assistance, the safety of civilians and the security of humanitarian personnel must be ensured by all parties in the conflict. (Read more: Libya: EU must step up efforts to support stability and democracy, MEPs say )

The European Parliament called on Azerbaijan to proceed with human rights reforms, Burundi to release human rights campaigner Pierre Claver Mbonimpa, and Bangladesh to apply international labour standards, in three resolutions voted on Thursday. (Read more: Human rights: Azerbaijan; the case of Mbonimpa in Burundi; Bangladesh )

The murders of journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and aid worker David Haines by the so-called Islamic State (IS) were strongly condemned by the European Parliament in a resolution voted on Thursday. The EU must use all possible means to help the Iraqi national and local authorities combat the IS, including appropriate military assistance, they said. They also urged the international community to cut off IS resources, and called for a political solution to the Syrian conflict. (Read more: Islamic State: step up EU and international efforts to end the killing )
