The fees that banks charge retailers to process shoppers’ payments should be capped under uniform rules across in the EU following a deal struck by Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and Council negotiators on Wednesday. The cap would apply to both cross-border and domestic card-based payments and should result in lower costs for consumers. (Read more: MEPs secure deal to cap card payment fees )

 

Parlamentspräsident Martin Schulz hat am Mittwoch (17.12.) die dänisch-polnische Koproduktion Ida mit dem LUX-Filmpreis ausgezeichnet. Der Film handelt von einer jungen Novizin, die ihre Tante trifft und mit ihr eine Reise macht, auf der sie die dunklen Geheimnisse ihrer Vergangenheit entdeckt. Der US-Senat hat einen Bericht über die Verhörmethoden der Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) veröffentlicht. In dem Bericht wird die CIA beschuldigt, ihre Gefangenen zu foltern. Die neue EU-Strategie der inneren Sicherheit muss so gestaltet sein, "dass sie ohne Weiteres an neue Entwicklungen angepasst werden kann", fordern die Abgeordneten in einer am Mittwoch angenommenen Entschließung. Darin verlangen sie weiterhin einen gemeinsamen Ansatz, um Probleme wie ausländische Kämpfer, Cyberkriminalität, Menschenhandel, Geldwäsche und Korruption zu bekämpfen. Die jüngsten Verhaftungen von Journalisten bei Razzien der türkischen Polizei gegen eine Zeitung und einen TV-Sender mit engen Verbindungen zum in der USA ansässigen islamischen Geistlichen Fethullah Gülen sind Thema einer Debatte mit dem italienischen Staatssekretär für auswärtige Angelegenheiten Benedetto Della Vedova und EU-Kommissar Dimitris Avramopoulos am Mittwoch ab ca. 16:30 Uhr. The EU should step up its efforts to help the steel industry out of the crisis, MEPs say in a non-binding resolution voted on Wednesday. They ask the European Commission to ensure that trade deals improve steel export conditions and check that EU competition and state aid rules do not lead to unfairness between EU countries. MEPs call for a comprehensive EU approach to migration and more effort to prevent further loss of life at sea in a resolution passed on Wednesday. Parliament asks the civil liberties committee to assess the various policies at stake, draw up a set of recommendations and report back to plenary with a "strategic initiative report" before the end of 2015. At least 3 072 people died in the Mediterranean Sea in the first nine months of this year. (Read more: Migration: MEPs call on EU countries to share responsibility )

 

Das Parlament "unterstützt grundsätzlich die Anerkennung der palästinensischen Eigenstaatlichkeit und die Zwei-Staaten-Lösung und ist der Auffassung, dass diese mit der Entwicklung der Friedensgespräche einhergehen sollten", steht in der am Mittwoch angenommenen Resolution. "Diese Friedensgespräche sollten vorangetrieben werden." Um die diplomatischen Bemühungen im Friedensprozess im Nahen Osten zu unterstützen, planen die Abgeordneten eine Initiative "Parlamentarier für den Frieden“.
