Debates on migration summits, Burundi, Georgia and Moldova with Ms Mogherini

25-11-2015 - 11:00

Terrorism, climate change, economic growth and migration, which dominated the 15-16 November G20 summit in Antalya, Turkey, will take centre stage in a debate with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and Nicolas Schmit, representing the Council Presidency, on Wednesday from 16.00. MEPs will also react to the joint action plan to ease migration pressure, agreed by EU and African leaders at the 11-12 November Valletta summit.

Later in the afternoon, MEPs will also debate the mounting insecurity, continuous violence and human rights violations in Burundi with the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. In subsequent debates, MEPs will assess the recent elections in Myanmar, the tense political situation in Georgia and political instability in Moldova following the government’s recent dismissal.

A resolution on the situation in Burundi is to be voted at the December plenary session.

You can watch the debate in plenary on EP Live and EbS+.

The House debated anti-dumping measures and sustainable initiatives to support the European base metals industry, including steel, with the Industry Commissioner, Elżbieta Bieńkowska, on Tuesday evening. It will vote in December on a draft resolution prepared by Edouard Martin (S&D, FR). (Read more: EU needs to boost its steel industry, say MEPs )

The terrorist attacks in Paris have highlighted once more the urgent need for coordinated action by the member states and the EU to prevent radicalisation and fight against terrorism, says Parliament in a non-binding resolution passed on Wednesday. The resolution sets out concrete proposals for a comprehensive strategy to tackle extremism, to be applied in particular in prisons, online and through education and social inclusion. (Read more: EP calls for joint EU strategy to fight radicalisation of young EU citizens )

"It is by effectively increasing cooperation between member states - from security apparatus to intelligence activities - that we, together, can defeat terrorism, make our citizens safer and preserve our way of life", President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella told MEPs during a formal sitting on Wednesday. Mr Mattarella spoke about the future of the EU, and in particular how EU countries should respond to the threat of terrorism and the challenges of migration. (Read more: “Tackle terrorism in the light of our values” says Italy’s President Mattarella )

The EU Commission should not authorise the recycling of plastics that contain the banned softener diethylhexyl phthalate (DHEP), to make soft PVC items such as footwear and floor coverings, because it poses a reproductive toxicity threat to exposed workers and could render their male foetuses sterile, says a non-binding resolution adopted by Parliament on Wednesday. (Read more: Don’t allow recycling of plastics that contain toxic phthalate DEHP, warn MEPs )

Parliament sets out its ideas on how to make corporate taxes fairer across Europe in a resolution voted on Wednesday. MEPs urge EU member states to agree on mandatory country-by-country reporting by multinationals of profits and taxes, a common consolidated corporate tax base, common definitions for tax terms and more transparency and accountability with regard to their – so far secret - national tax “rulings” for companies. (Read more: Parliament calls for corporate tax makeover )

Parliament adopted the EU budget for 2016 on Wednesday, setting commitment appropriations at €155 billion and payment appropriations at €143.9 billion as agreed between Parliament and Council on 14 November. Parliament secured the maximum amount of funding possible for migration and refugees, small and medium sized enterprises, students, and the EU research programme Horizon2020. (Read more: Migration and jobs: Parliament adopts next year's EU budget )

“Political grandstanding” that equates refugees with terrorists only foments the hatred and disillusion that inspires those who join terrorist groups, argued many MEPs in Wednesday’s debate. Rather than allow Europe’s freedoms and tolerance to be eroded, EU countries must strive to strengthen security, by stepping up intelligence cooperation and data-sharing, and investing in the skills and technology needed to fight terrorism, MEPs urged. (Read more: Don’t equate refugees with terrorists – boost security instead, urge MEPs )
