An EU scheme to mobilise €44 billion in private sector investment in Africa and the EU’s neighbourhood should focus on the poor, said committee MEPs on Monday. (Read more: EU plan to tackle root causes of migration should focus on the poor, MEPs say )

A wide variety of internal and external issues are up for debate at this week’s plenary session in Brussels. MEPs discuss the recent referendum in Turkey with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini while developments in Greece, Hungary and Venezuela are also on the agenda. In Parliament’s committees, MEPs are to vote on the protection of minors online and on limiting the geoblocking of services. Also up for a vote is the establishment of an EU fund to fight the root causes of migration. (Read more: In Parliament this week: Turkey, geoblocking, social protection, migration )

Cultural heritage plays an important role in the history and identity of Europe’s countries and indeed of the continent as a whole. A vital part of Europe’s economy, promoting our cultural treasures can only help boost growth and employment. On 27 April, Parliament votes on making 2018 the European Year of Cultural Heritage. More on this initiative, which aims to strengthen a sense of European identity, in our interview with Romanian MEP Mircea Diaconu. (Read more: European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018: why it is important )

Antonio Tajani stressed the importance of a deal to safeguard people’s rights in the wake of Brexit during a meeting with UK Prime Minister Theresa May this morning. "The European Parliament's message is clear: strongly defending their interests is our first priority,” he said. The Parliament President was in London to discuss the institution’s position on the Brexit negotiations, which was adopted in plenary on 5 April. He also invited May to address the Parliament. The European Union is focussing this year on delivering results in areas that matter to all Europeans. EU institutions have agreed on a set of priorities ranging from boosting e-commerce to protecting the environment and strengthening borders. Four months into the year, check out which major legislative proposals MEPs have already approved. (Read more: EU priorities for 2017: what Parliament has achieved so far )

The EU could soon have new privacy rules to take account of new practices such as internet-based messaging and allow users better control of their privacy settings, especially when it comes to cookies. Parliament's civil liberties committee discussed the plans by the European Commission on 11 April. Marju Lauristin, the MEP responsible for steering the rules through Parliament, said that if companies providing communication services wanted to be trusted they needed to ensure confidentiality. (Read more: E-privacy: MEPs look at new rules to safeguard your personal details online )

Decorating eggs is one of Europe's most cherished Easter traditions, but are the eggs we buy safe? The European Parliament has worked on different laws to ensure hens and their eggs are healthy. This includes a ban on the use of battery cages for hens and the use of the egg code to inform shoppers how an egg was produced. Watch our video for more information. (Read more: Eggs: how the EU is keeping them safe and healthy )

One in every three girls in developing countries is married before turning 18, and one in nine before 15. Child marriages limit future prospects as children are usually forced to drop out of school. Girls also face dangerous complications from pregnancy and childbirth, the leading causes of death among adolescent girls in developing countries. They are also at great risk from suffering abuse. On 11 April Parliament's women's rights and human rights subcommittee discussed the issue with experts. (Read more: Child marriages: MEPs discuss how to put an end to this scourge )

Environment MEPs put forward a number of possible measures to cut the EU 88 million tonnes per year food waste by half by 2030 on Tuesday. MEPs called on the European Commission to lift existing restrictions on food donations and stressed a solution is needed for the confusion created for many consumers by the “best before” and “use by” labelling. (Read more: Proposals for cutting food waste )
