The candidate commissioners as presented by incoming Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, will be scrutinised by the European Parliament committees from 29 September to 7 October. Members will evaluate candidates' suitability before the full house votes on the proposed Commission. The leaders of the political groups have agreed on Thursday on the format and programme for the public hearings. (Read more: Public hearings of commissioners-candidate: format and schedule )

The EU must step up its involvement in supporting Libya’s stability and transition to democracy, said the European Parliament in a vote on Thursday. MEPs condemned the growing use of violence there, especially against civilians, and called for a ceasefire between the fighting factions. They also said humanitarian assistance, the safety of civilians and the security of humanitarian personnel must be ensured by all parties in the conflict. (Read more: Libya: EU must step up efforts to support stability and democracy, MEPs say )

The European Parliament called on Azerbaijan to proceed with human rights reforms, Burundi to release human rights campaigner Pierre Claver Mbonimpa, and Bangladesh to apply international labour standards, in three resolutions voted on Thursday. (Read more: Human rights: Azerbaijan; the case of Mbonimpa in Burundi; Bangladesh )

The Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa has been underrated by the international community and now constitutes a challenge to global security, say MEPs in a resolution voted on Thursday. As the affected countries face socio-economic collapse, the deployment of military assets under the UN flag should be considered and access to existing treatments speeded up, they add. (Read more: West Africa’s Ebola outbreak is a global security issue, says Parliament )

EU member states need to make more efficient use of €6 billon in EU funds to ease the transition from education to jobs for young people and foster entrepreneurship, urged MEPs in Wednesday's debate on the European Youth Initiative. Some advocated simplifying funding procedures, sharing best practices, and promoting apprenticeships, whilst others urged member states to do more to exploit the job-creating potential of new energy-saving and green technologies. (Read more: Getting the European Youth Initiative to deliver jobs )

EU aid to help workers made redundant in various industries in Spain, The Netherlands, Romania and Greece to find new jobs was approved by the European Parliament on Wednesday. The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) funding, which would complement national efforts, now needs to be approved by the Council of Ministers. (Read more: EP approves aid to redundant workers in Spain, Netherlands, Romania and Greece )

The pharmaceutical industry is raising the prices of new, life-saving medicines ever higher, thus threatening the equal access to treatments while increasing the burden on healthcare systems, said MEPs during a debate with Council and the Commission on Tuesday. The issue will be discussed during the next informal Health Council meeting of 22-23 September. (Read more: MEPs question high pricing of certain life-saving medicines )
