Newsroom

The European Parliament Conference of Presidents (EP President and political group leaders) today debated the package of proposals adopted by Commission on refugee and migration policies. This package appears to be a balanced and comprehensive one. (Read more: Visa liberalisation: Turkey must meet all benchmarks before EP can vote )

Libya faces not only political instability and an increasing Islamic State presence, but it is also at risk of attracting more migrants trying to reach Europe by boat from there. We talked to Italian S&D member Pier Antonio Panzeri, chair of the Parliament delegation for relations with the Maghreb, about how the EU-Turkey agreement on migration will affect Libya and how the EU could potentially help the country to tackle the Islamic State. (Read more: Panzeri on Libya: "The sooner we act the better it will be for all of us” )

On Sunday 8 May in Strasbourg and on Saturday 28 May in Brussels, the European Parliament and other EU institutions will open their doors to the general public, a unique opportunity to discover the diversity of Europe in a fun and family-friendly atmosphere. (Read more: Europe Day - European Parliament open days )

Public sector bodies' websites and mobile applications will have to be made accessible to everyone, under a provisional deal struck by Parliament and Council negotiators on Tuesday night. Over 167 million EU citizens have a disability (either medical or due to age) which prevents them accessing data and services on the Internet, e.g. to file a tax declaration, apply for an allowance, pay fees or register a child at school. Italian project InteGREAT to support the integration of refugees has been named as this year's Charlemagne Youth Prize. The award is given out by the European Parliament and the International Charlemagne Prize Foundation every year to young people aged between 16 and 30 who have been involved with projects helping to promote understanding between people from different European countries. The ceremony took place in Aachen, Germany, on 3 May. (Read more: And the 2016 Charlemagne Youth Prize goes to... )

The fight for fair taxation in the EU has been high on Parliament's agenda long before LuxLeaks and the Panama papers. Since the start of the economic and financial crisis, MEPs have been pushing for greater transparency and an end to tax unfair practices. Read on for our overview of Parliament initiatives. (Read more: Overview: the European Parliament's work on taxation )

All refugees face great hardship but women and girls are among the most vulnerable of those travelling to the EU in search of protection from war, human rights abuses and deprivation. Because of their gender, they are often the victims of violence and discrimination. (Read more: Women on the Move: Precarious Journeys - Protection for Women Refugees )

The award ceremony will take place at the Vatican on 6 May at 12:00. It will be introduced by “laudatio” speeches by European Parliament President Martin Schulz, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Council President Donald Tusk. On the previous day, the three EU Presidents will take part in a panel debate about the state of the EU, preceded by an address by Italian PM Matteo Renzi. (Read more: Pope Francis to be awarded Charlemagne Prize on 6 May )

An upgrade of the EU lobbyist register is in the works after the European Commission launched a public consultation on switching from voluntary to mandatory registration for anyone interested in speaking to EU institutions to influence their work. EP Vice-President Sylvie Guillaume holds a debate with experts together with Commission’s First Vice-President Frans Timmermans on 2 May at 15.00 CET in Parliament’s premises in Brussels. Follow it online and watch our video to learn more. (Read more: Lobbying: Parliament hosts conference on mandatory EU transparency register )

Plans to set up a mandatory EU lobbying register are discussed by MEPs and stakeholders on Monday. The next day Parliament President Martin Schulz is in Aachen to award the 2016 European Charlemagne Youth Prize and on Sunday the Parliament opens its doors to the general public in Strasbourg to celebrate Europe Day. Meanwhile political groups prepare for next week's plenary session in Strasbourg. (Read more: In Parliament this week: Charlemagne Youth Prize, open day, transparency )
