The civil liberties committee debates France's controversial new law on surveillance powers on Thursday, 2 July. MEPs will raise concerns about the compatibility of some of the law's provisions with the European treaties with the Commission's director for criminal justice, Francisco Morillo. (Read more: Civil liberties MEPs to debate concerns over French surveillance law )

An informal deal to ban surcharges ("roaming fees") for making mobile phone calls, sending text messages or using the internet while abroad in another EU country from 15 June 2017 was struck by MEPs and EU ministers in the small hours of Tuesday morning. MEPs also inserted guarantees that all internet traffic is treated equally, without discrimination. To enter into force, this informal deal needs to be formally endorsed by the full Parliament and the Council of Ministers. (Read more: Cheaper mobile calls and open internet: MEPs and ministers strike informal deal )

International Trade Committee MEPs on Monday paved the way for a plenary vote on the European Parliament’s draft recommendations for Transatlantic Trade and investment partnership (TTIP) negotiators, by retabling the June plenary amendments which had been referred back for reconsideration. The committee took the decision in two separate votes –one to retable the plenary amendments, and the other to retable requests for split or separate votes. (Read more: TTIP: MEPs pave way for plenary vote by retabling June amendments )

Transport Committee MEPs will discuss aviation safety with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Executive Director Patrick Ky and the European Commission on Monday afternoon, after the Germanwings air crash in the French Alps in March. (Read more: MEPs debate air safety on Monday following Germanwings air crash in March )

The European Commission’s weak response to the first EU citizens’ initiative (ECI) petition, on the “Right2Water”, could discredit the ECI system, warn Environment Committee MEPs in a resolution voted on Wednesday. It “lacks any real ambition and failed to meet the demands of the organizers”, they add. ECIs enable citizens to ask the Commission to propose laws in areas within its competence, if they can muster at least one million signatures from at least a quarter of EU member states. (Read more: Right2water citizens’ initiative: Commission must act, say MEPs )

Negotiations on proposals to revise the Interinstitutional Agreement on Better Regulation kicked off on Thursday with a meeting in the European Parliament between EP President Martin Schulz, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Latvia’s Prime Minister, Laimdota Straujuma, representing the current Council Presidency and Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel for the incoming Council Presidency. (Read more: Better Regulation: kick-off meeting on Interinstitutional Agreement )

Trading in seal products from hunts hitherto conducted to protect fishing stocks will be banned in the EU in future but the exemption for the trade in products derived from seal hunts carried out by the Inuit community will remain, under the preliminary deal struck by internal market MEPs and the Latvian Presidency of the Council on Thursday. (Read more: MEPs close deal with Council on seal products )

Draft plans to encourage food innovation via a new, simplified authorisation procedure for novel foods, already informally agreed with the Council of Ministers, were endorsed by the Environment Committee on Thursday. In talks, MEPs insisted that foods from cloned animals must be clearly included in the scope of the regulation, as must the precautionary principle, measures to keep nanomaterials under scrutiny and animal testing restrictions. (Read more: Novel Foods: food safety MEPs back deal with Council )

The European Commission's corporate tax action plan, tabled on 7 June was debated with Commissioner Pierre Moscovici in plenary session on Wednesday evening. Rather than a plan, MEPs asked the Commission to accelerate its work on this pressing issue so as to deliver concrete legislative proposals. (Read more: Corporate tax: MEPs urge Commission to work faster and propose laws )
