15:30 - 16:30 The President's diary

As countries all over the world discuss how they can work together to tackle the threat posed by ISIS, MEPs will debate on 17 September what the EU can do to improve the situation in the Middle East. Anna Fotyga, a Polish member of the ECR group and chair of the security and defence subcommittee, shared her views with us ahead of the debate, adding that she expects a tough hearing for Federica Mogherini, the EU's incoming foreign affairs chief. (Read more: "We have an asymmetric war against western society coming from all directions" )

More effort is needed to integrate the EU digital single market, so as to unlock its growth and job-creating potential, stressed MEPs in Tuesday’s debate with EU Internal Market Commissioner Michel Barnier. Measures to bring together the 28 national digital markets should include ending mobile roaming charges, promoting e-commerce, ensuring open access to the Internet for users and neutral treatment of its service providers, and also better data protection, they added. (Read more: Digital single market needs to be better integrated, say MEPs )

EU member states’ progress in implementing the European Youth Initiative, a set of measures to combat youth unemployment in regions where it exceeds 25%, will be debated with Commissioner László Andor and Italian Undersecretary of State Benedetto Della Vedova on Wednesday, starting at 10.00. Parliament has already criticised the slow roll-out of the necessary national policies, in a resolution voted on 17 July. (Read more: Debate on European Youth Initiative )

Are measures to help reduce youth unemployment working? MEPs will assess the progress of two key programmes - the European Youth Guarantee and the Youth Employment Initiative - with the Council and the Commission on Wednesday 17 September. This evaluation is sorely needed considering as many as 5.2 million young people were out of work in the EU in May. Check out the graph to see how unemployment evolved in the UK, Ireland and the EU over the last 15 years. (Read more: Youth unemployment: how successful were measures to boost the job market? )

Press releases (second part)

“You have to be able to persuade, coax and cajole sometimes reluctant institutions to change long-standing mind-sets or to be more open in their decision making," said European ombudsman Emily O'Reilly. "This is where being an ombudsman can seem more like an art than a science." Elected by MEPs in July 2013, the former Irish national ombudsman is the first female European ombudsman. We talked to her about her first year in office. (Read more: Emily O'Reilly: “Being an ombudsman can seem more like an art than a science” )

The Council’s version of the draft EU budget for 2015 disregards its own political pledge to spur economic growth and job creation, MEPs said after Council Presidency representative Enrico Zanetti presented it in plenary session on Tuesday. (Read more: EU budget 2015: back your policy pledges with money, MEPs urge ministers )

The pharmaceutical industry is placing fewer innovative medicines on the market each year but raising their prices ever higher, says an oral question to be debated with the Council and the Commission on Tuesday evening. The prices of certain hepatitis and cancer treatments in particular are unjustifiably high, argues the text. (Read more: Are the prices of certain life-saving medicines too high ? )

The signing of agreements is rarely accompanied by applause, shouting and the flashing of victory signs, but this one was years in the making and responsible for a major change in European affairs. Many MEPs were quick to show their joy when the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement was ratified simultaneously by the Ukrainian and European Parliaments on Tuesday 16 September, the first time in the EU's history that such a vote took place at the same time in the EP. (Read more: Historic vote: EU–Ukraine agreement approved in Strasbourg and Kiev )

The European Parliament gave its consent to the EU-Ukraine Association agreement, which includes a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA), on Tuesday in Strasbourg. At the same time, the Agreement was also ratified by the Ukrainian Parliament in Kiev. The deal will establish a deep political association and economic integration between the EU and Ukraine and provide for mutual free market access. (Read more: European Parliament ratifies EU-Ukraine Association Agreement )

The EU should take a more proactive line on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and impose tougher sanctions on Russia, urged some political groups in Tuesday’s debate with EU Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Štefan Füle. Others, however, stressed the need to "keep communication channels open". (Read more: MEPs evaluate EU policy towards Russia )
