Two distinguished visits marked the November plenary session. On Tuesday Pope Francis addressed MEPs, followed by the 2014 Sakharov Prize laureate, Dr Denis Mukwege, who did likewise on Wednesday. Mukwege received the award for his work helping victims of sexual violence in conflict. The European Commission's €315 billion investment plan to boost the EU economy, and UN climate talk preparations were other topics that added to a packed agenda. (Read more: Things we learnt in plenary: Sakharov Prize, papal visit, economic boost )

The next European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) will be Giovanni Buttarelli, Parliament's President Martin Schulz announced in plenary on Thursday. His Assistant Supervisor will be Wojciech Rafał Wiewiórowski. (Read more: Giovanni Buttarelli named new data protection watchdog )

The European Parliament called on EU member states and the European Commission to break down barriers to the growth of the EU's digital single market in a resolution voted on Thursday. MEPs also stressed the need to prevent online companies from abusing dominant positions by enforcing EU competition rules and unbundling search engines from other commercial services. (Read more: MEPs zero in on internet search companies and clouds )

Parliament passed three resolutions on Thursday, calling on the Pakistani government to review its blasphemy laws; condemning atrocities by the so-called Islamic State in Iraq; and calling for action against the "wartime rhetoric" and hate speech of provisionally released Serbian war crimes suspect Vojislav Šešelj. (Read more: Human rights: blasphemy in Pakistan; kidnapping in Iraq; war crimes in Serbia )

Press releases (second part)

The European Parliament rejected a motion of censure against Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s team on Thursday, with 461 votes against, 101 in favour and 88 abstentions. The motion was tabled by 76 EFDD and non-attached MEPs further to the "Lux leaks" plenary session debate with Mr Juncker on 12 November. A debate on the motion was held on Monday. (Read more: Motion of censure against the Commission rejected by a large majority )

A negotiating team led by Alain Lamassoure (EPP, FR) struck a political deal with the Council and the Commission on European Long Term Investment Funds (ELTIFs) on Wednesday evening. These funds should boost non-bank financing for projects that deliver infrastructure, intellectual property or research results which benefit the real economy and society. (Read more: Deal secured to boost infrastructure investment in the EU )

Sweden recently became the latest EU country to recognise Palestine as a state. Today after 15.00 CET MEPs will hold a debate on the recognition of Palestine statehood. Would such a move help defuse violence in the region? We discussed it with Martina Anderson (GUE/NGL, UK), chair of the delegation for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council, and Fulvio Martusciello (EPP, Italy), chair of the delegation for relations with Israel. (Read more: Debate: should Palestine be recognised as a state? )

A non-binding resolution calling for EU legislation to separate internet search engines from commercial services will be debated by MEPs today and voted on tomorrow. The aim is to level the playing field for online businesses and secure long-term benefits for internet users. Follow the debate and vote live on our website. (Read more: MEPs to vote on plans to separate search engines from commercial activities )

Talks to be held in Lima next month should enable global partners to reach an ambitious climate agreement in Paris in 2015, so as to keep the world on track for a sub-2°C climate warming scenario, Parliament said in a resolution voted on Wednesday. MEPs reiterated the pledge by the EU and its member states to step up contributions to the UN Green Climate Fund. (Read more: Climate change talks: MEPs chart the course from Lima to Paris )

"Women's bodies have become a true battlefield and rape is being used as a weapon of war," said Congolese gynaecologist Denis Mukwege as he accepted the 2014 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in Strasbourg on Wednesday 26 November. Dr Mukwege was honoured by the European Parliament for dedicating his life to helping thousands of victims of gang rape and brutal sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
