Quatro anos após o início da Primavera Árabe na Tunísia, a transição do país para a democracia é vista como um exemplo na região. O acordo comercial entre a UE e os Estados Unidos deve aumentar o acesso europeu ao mercado norte-americano, mas sem comprometer os padrões da UE nem o direito de legislar no interesse público, disse hoje a comissão parlamentar do Comércio Internacional nas suas recomendações à Comissão Europeia para as negociações da Parceria Transatlântica de Comércio e Investimento (TTIP). Os eurodeputados defendem também uma reforma das regras sobre a resolução de litígios entre investidores e Estados. Tunisia’s Prime Minister Habib Essid met the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Human Rights and Security and Defence subcommittees on Thursday to discuss the latest developments in his country. Security challenges, fighting terrorism and tackling migration flows were the key issues raised in the debate. A deal struck by MEPs and Council of Ministers negotiators in the small hours of Thursday morning means the architecture of the Juncker plan to unlock €315 billion public and private investments in the real economy in 2015-2017 can now be put to a European Parliament vote on 24 June and the investment programme can kick off in the summer. O Parlamento Europeu aprovou alterações a uma proposta legislativa que cria um quadro comum para os regimes de distribuição de fruta e de leite nas escolas. Os eurodeputados querem promover uma alimentação saudável desde a mais tenra idade, aproximar as crianças dos produtos locais e reforçar a componente educativa dos programas. O consumo de fruta, produtos hortícolas e leite continua a diminuir em toda a Europa. O excesso de peso afeta 22 milhões de crianças na UE. A Europa deve concentrar-se em salvar vidas quando se trata da migração, afirmou Ban Ki-moon, Secretário-Geral da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU), durante um discurso no Parlamento Europeu a 27 de maio. “A Europa tem um papel importante a desempenhar e tem a responsabilidade de agir. A principal prioridade deve ser salvar vidas”, afirmou, chamado a atenção para as 1 800 pessoas que perderam a vida este ano quando tentavam atravessar o Mediterrâneo. "The Central African Republic is doing much better. There is a clear improvement even if it is still very fragile," CAR's interim president, Catherine Samba-Panza, told foreign affairs MEPs on Tuesday. CAR still needs the EU's "multi-dimensional aid", she stressed, calling on member states to redouble their efforts to help the CAR meet its electoral, budgetary and security challenges.
