Newsroom

Starting today, the rotating six-month presidency of the Council of the EU will be in the hands of one of the smallest, yet most experience member states. Luxembourg will have to deal with many pressing issues, including the Greek debt crisis, an increase in irregular migration and the preparation for the climate change conference in Paris in December. We asked all of the country's six MEPs what they see as the main challenges. Read on to find out what they said. An informal deal to ban surcharges ("roaming fees") for making mobile phone calls, sending text messages or using the internet while abroad in another EU country from 15 June 2017 was struck by MEPs and EU ministers in the small hours of Tuesday morning. MEPs also inserted guarantees that all internet traffic is treated equally, without discrimination. To enter into force, this informal deal needs to be formally endorsed by the full Parliament and the Council of Ministers. EP President Martin Schulz said the EU institutions are appealing to the Greek people to vote in favour of their proposals during Sunday's referendum. Speaking about proposals made to continue economic support for the country, Schulz said yesterday this represented "a hand stretched to the Greek people", adding that the result of the referendum would prove "fundamental" to Greece's position in the euro zone. The Germanwings disaster in the French Alps on 24 March raised important questions about air safety after investigators discovered the co-pilot has intentionally crashed the plane, killing 150 people. The transport committee discussed on 29 June how to prevent this from happening again with the European Commission and Patrick Ky, executive director of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). They also discussed the recommendations of an EASA task force dedicated to the crash. (Read more: Germanwings crash: how to improve aviation safety in the EU )

Press releases (second part)

International Trade Committee MEPs on Monday paved the way for a plenary vote on the European Parliament’s draft recommendations for Transatlantic Trade and investment partnership (TTIP) negotiators, by retabling the June plenary amendments which had been referred back for reconsideration. The committee took the decision in two separate votes –one to retable the plenary amendments, and the other to retable requests for split or separate votes. (Read more: TTIP: MEPs pave way for plenary vote by retabling June amendments )

Today the European Parliament's Conference of Presidents (EP President and political group leaders) discussed the latest situation on Greece with Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. The Conference of Presidents then discussed the situation further and adopted a position on the immediate next step that should be taken.
