More EU efforts needed to tackle youth unemployment, say MEPs

Devising a "European Investment Plan" to create new jobs, reallocating EU structural funds to projects to create them for young people, and introducing a "European Youth Guarantee" to ensure that they are not without jobs for more than four months, are among the proposals set out by MEPs in a resolution, adopted Thursday, on measures to tackle youth unemployment.

 
 

Volunteering: passport to a job?

Volunteering is a way to remain active, in contact with the world of work, and can even help to find a job. A "European Skills Passport" could certify official recognition of skills, acquired or demonstrated through volunteering, both for professional and learning purposes. A report voted by the Culture and Education Committee on Thursday calls on EU Member States to create an appropriate legal framework and national strategies to this end.

 
 

EU needs more modern and more competitive universities

MEPs urge EU Member States to ensure that higher education institutions are better funded, that people from all social backgrounds can study at them, and that more students can study abroad, in a resolution passed on Friday. University courses need to be constantly adapted to labour market needs in order to make Europe's higher education more competitive, they add.

Small cinemas need EU help to make the digital switch

Digital equipment is too dear for small independent cinemas to be able to keep up with the digital revolution, say MEPs in a resolution voted on Wednesday. The text calls for specific EU subsidies to help them to invest in production, archiving 3D projection, HDTV or Blue-Ray technology.

 
 

A common European heritage label from 2013

A voluntary European heritage label may from 2013 be granted to symbolic sites for Europe's history or integration, further to a decision taken by Parliament on Wednesday. Particular attention will go to "transnational" sites, given their special symbolism for Europe's common history.

 
 

"Zăpezile de pe Kilimandjaro" câștigă premiul LUX 2011

Câștigătorul premiului LUX 2011 este filmul realizat de Robert Guédiguian "Zăpezile de pe Kilimandjaro". Președintele Parlamentului European, Jerzy Buzek, a înmânat premiul producătorului francez al filmului, astăzi, în cadrul unei ceremonii în plenul Parlamentului European din Strasbourg. Filmul relevă injustițiile societății actuale, pledează pentru toleranță și aduce în prim plan bătăliile politice și sindicale.

 
 

The EU should initiate strict, even penal, measures, against doping, match-fixing and violence in sports stadia, and also set up a European data base listing people banned from stadia, says a draft resolution voted by the Culture and Education Committee on Thursday.
