Presentation and competencies

This delegation’s remit covers relations with the countries of Central America: Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Cuba. The Central American Parliament, created following the wars which devastated the region, has been our leading partner in this region since its inception. We have regular contacts with this institution, whose members are directly elected, and in particular with its bureaux.
The Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement signed in December 2003 provides for the establishment of a Joint Parliamentary Committee once the Agreement has been ratified by the various parties. The ongoing negotiations between the EU and Central America should confirm the establishment of this body for parliamentary dialogue.
Every year, the members of the delegation participate in two organised trips and receive visits from members of the region’s national parliaments and from members of the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN).
Members of the delegation have participated in election observations in the countries of the region.
