Article 9 of the Association Agreement between the EU and Chile, signed in Brussels on 18 November 2002, provides for the creation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee, whose main task is to monitor the application of the agreement and to make proposals with a view to improving its operation. The committee comprises two delegations with an equal number of members from the European Parliament and from the Chilean Senate/Chamber of Deputies respectively. The Association Agreement, in addition to its commercial aspects, also includes sections on cooperation and political dialogue.

The committee, set up at the beginning of this legislative period, holds two meetings a year, alternately in Chile and the EU. The bureaux of the two delegations hold several meetings per year.

At these meetings, subjects of common interest are raised, permitting an exchange of views between members. Draft items of European legislation, such as the REACH Directive, are often the subject of discussion and exchanges of information, making it possible to improve understanding of the European legislators’ wishes as well as of our partners' concerns.
