Presentation and competencies

Until the last European elections in June 2004, relations with the Republic of (South) Korea were covered by the ASEAN delegation, mainly in connection with trade disputes, while the few contacts which took place with the Democratic People’s Republic of (North) Korea from 2000 were arranged by the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Since the creation of the Delegation for relations with the Korean Peninsula in September 2004, contacts with both parties have been stepped up, and the European Union enjoys a very positive image in both states. The delegation visits one or other part of the Peninsula (usually both) at least once a year and has received parliamentary delegations from both Korean states in Brussels or Strasbourg.

The members of the delegation also participate in a number of political and economic events involving the European Union and its official Korean partners.
