They discussed effective ways of combating poverty and social exclusion as an imperative for European governance.

Strasbourg - 06/07/2010Parliament's President Jerzy Buzek opened the Strasbourg plenary session by voicing sorrow at the recent floods in Romania, Asturias in Spain and other parts of Europe. He also condemned recent attacks on the Baha'i community in Iran and the ongoing use of the death penalty there, including for minors. Lastly, he highlighted the 10th anniversary of the death of Polish wartime resistance fighter Jan Karski, in 1942 the first person to report on the extermination of Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe.

Brussels - 25/03/2010The Commission's proposed "EU 2020 Strategy" is a new document which still poses more questions than it offers answers, and I am glad that you will be taking the time to discuss it today. There is broad support in the EP for the Strategy. I am convinced that the 2020 strategy has to be as concrete, as binding and as targeted as the Single Market project was 25 years ago. Without a legislative programme of some kind, it is unlikely that we will succeed.

Brussels - 14/04/2010In an emotionally charged yet dignified atmosphere Parliament's Polish President Jerzy Buzek led Members of the European Parliament in a ceremony to honour the Polish plane crash. A moment's silence was observed before the names of all the 96 victims were read out and a flower placed in their memory. Addressing a Chamber packed with MEPs and Parliament staff Mr Buzek said "the messages of support I have received have given me and my country some strength and comfort".
