"This is the right result for Europe.  I warmly congratulate Mr Barroso on his re-election as European Commission President.  The result is a victory for European democracy and for the European Parliament.  We need strong stable institutions that can work in the interests of our citizens," said European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek speaking after the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, was approved by 382 votes in favour, 219 against and 117 abstentions, in Strasbourg today.

EP President Jerzy Buzek stated: "We are no longer in a political vacuum and President Barroso can start to build on his detailed programme and construct his team of Commissioners.  The European Parliament has shown that it has teeth.  The President for the first time presented me with his written 'political guidelines'.  I welcome this as and trust it will be repeated.  This represents a new dawn for relations between Parliament and Commission."


European Parliament to guarantee more accountability

EP President Jerzy Buzek commented: "Our Parliament will play a full role in the hearings of the new Commissioners to ensure the strongest possible European Commission. We have also agreed that there will be a new 'Question Hour' every plenary where Mr Barroso will answer questions from MEPs."
