Following the earthquake that has hit Chile today, the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek sends his condolences to the families and friends of the victims and to the Chilean authorities.  

EP President Jerzy Buzek said "My thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims, we wish those injured a speedy recovery.  My sincere condolences and we stand side by side with the Chilean people and authorities."

The earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 hit central Chile, killing many people.  The earthquake struck early this morning CET about 115km north-east of the city of Concepcion and 325km south-west of the capital, Santiago. Tsunami warnings have been issued in the region.
