REACTION OF EPP President, Mr. KLAUS HÄNSCH
EUROPEAN ELECTIONS IN AUSTRIA: REACTION OF PRESIDENT HÄNSCH
The President of the European Parliament, Klaus HÄNSCH, described the turnout for last Sunday's
European Elections in Austria as 'exemplary', adding that 'this is also the case, when we take into
account that these elections went hand in hand with the regional elections in Vienna'.
The President congratulated the new Austrian members, and thanked those who had represented
Austria within the EP since accession in January 1995.
'The turnout and the result, which reflects Austrian domestic politics, are for me proof that these are
not protest elections, but reflect a change in the balance of the political forces whose elected
members will represent Austria in the EP. Within the European Parliament itself, this result will have
very little effect on the present distribution of political forces', concluded President HAENSCH.
