Highlights of the Week
8th to 14th December 1997

Among the main features of the week will be the speech on Friday 12th December to the Luxembourg European Council by the President of the European Parliament, Mr José María GIL-ROBLES.

Another key item will be the Budget Committee's vote, on Tuesday 9th December, on the amendments to the 1998 draft budget (2nd reading).

On Wednesday 10th December, topics before the Conciliation Committee will be the Socrates programme and voice telephony.

On Monday 8th December, the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a meeting with Commissioner Manuel MARIN to discuss the CFSP. The committee will then decide its position on future relations between Europe and the USA. Also on Monday, the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs will look at access to continuing training in the EU.

The Civil Liberties Committee will reach a decision on Monday on sects and cults in Europe and will hold talks with the Spanish Interior Minister, Mr Jaime MAYOR OREJA, on Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, the Environment Committee will state its view on emissions of volatile organic compounds.
