Memorial’s Oyub Titiev kept in Chechnya prison until December 2018 (05/09/2018)

Head of Memorial's Chechnya office Oyub Titiev has been imprisoned since 9 January 2018 on fabricated charges of possessing drugs.  Titiev's arrest is a retribution for his work in defence of human rights and aims to put an end to Memorial's activities in Chechnya. Despite a strong international outcry in defence of Titiev, the Shalin city court has refused to consider the evidence that his case is fabricated and has extended his detention until 22 December 2018.

On 9 July this year, 2009 Sakharov Laureate Oleg Orlov was arrested and released by the police the same day after holding a poster calling for the release of Oyub Titiev in Moscow. Earlier this year, the office of Memorial in Grozny and the car of the organisation in neighbouring Dagestan was set on fire. In June 2018, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation in Russia demanding "the immediate and unconditional release of Oyub Titiev and all other political prisoners in the Russian Federation". While in jail, Oyub Titiev was nominated for the 2018 Václav Havel Human Rights Prize, established by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
