Parliamentary questions
25 September 2009
E-3730/2009
Answer given by Mr Dimas on behalf of the Commission

Contrails from aircraft comprise predominantly of water vapour. These are of environmental concern as they are considered to have an atmospheric warming effect and therefore contribute to climate change. However, the scientific understanding of these impacts is not currently well developed and therefore it is it is not feasible to introduce policy measures at this stage. The Commission will continue to follow scientific developments in this area closely with a view to considering policy measures once the impacts are better understood.
