Answer given by Ms Malmström on behalf of the Commission

Council Directive 2009/50/EC on the conditions of entry and residence of third‑country nationals for the purposes of highly qualified employment(1) must be transposed into national law by the Member States by 19 June 2011. For the time being, only Spain has notified measures of transposition to the Commission. If a Member State has not transposed a Directive into national law within the stated timelimig, the Commission can launch an infringement procedure the Member State. In its role as guardian of the Treaties, the Commissione will carefully monitor the transposition of the directive in question and will consider launching infringement proceedings against Member States which do not notify their national measures of transpositions by the deadline of 19 June 2011.
