Answer given by Mr Dalli on behalf of the Commission
The re-assessment of glyphosate will be based on a dossier to be submitted by the applicant by 31 May 2012. This deadline and the procedural steps for 1) the evaluation by the Rapporteur Member State (Germany) and by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and 2) the decision on the approval/non approval by the Commission are laid down in Regulation (EU) No 1141/2010(1).
This regulation does not provide for any rule that would allow the Commission to prioritise one or more substances, but it lays down clear provisions and timelines to be followed in the re-assessment process. Although at this stage the Commission cannot predict the exact length of this process. On the basis of the timelines provided for in Regulation (EU) No 1141/2010 and in case EFSA is asked to organise a peer review, taking into account all procedural steps, EFSA conclusions on glyphosate might be available by May 2014. In such case, the Commission would be able to submit, ahead of the 2015 deadline, an implementing decision for approval/non approval to the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health.
