Parliamentary questions
26 May 2014
E-003699/2014
Answer given by Mr Borg on behalf of the Commission

The Honourable Member is invited to refer to the answers to written questions E-004111/2011, E‐006543/2011, E-007161/2011, E-002062/2012 and E-005276/2013(1) which address the issues of stray dogs and of dog population management.

In the context of the EU strategy for the protection and welfare of animals 2012-2015(2), the Commission decided to perform a study on the welfare of dogs and cats involved in commercial practices. In the light of this study, which is expected to be finalised by the end of 2014, the Commission will consider if it is necessary and possible to take specific initiatives in this field with due regard to the competences conferred by the Treaty to the European Union.
