Parliamentary question - E-007820/2014(ASW)Parliamentary question
E-007820/2014(ASW)

Answer given by High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini on behalf of the Commission

The case of Mr Boroujerdi is indeed worrying as explained by the Honourable Member. The European External Action Service (EEAS) is following it closely.

According to representatives of Ayatollah Boroujerdi he is presently in solitary confinement in an unknown place.

This situation is obviously alarming, in particular because Mr Boroujerdi should not have been in prison in the first place. The Islamic Republic of Iran must live up to its international obligations on human rights, including on the freedom of religion and beliefs. The EU has on several occasions called on Iran to honour its human rights commitments.

As for the number of executions in Iran, the European Union is appalled that it continues to increase and has repeatedly called on Iran to stay all pending executions and consider a moratorium on the death penalty. The European Union's latest call on Iran in this respect was made in a public statement on 29 October this year (Press Release by the Council of the European Union, doc. ST 14811/14).
