Parliamentary questions
7 March 2016
E-000125/2016
Answer given by Mr Andriukaitis on behalf of the Commission

1. The Commission has not taken any further actions in the area of fibromyalgia since the project financed under the Health programme ‘European Musculoskeletal Conditions Surveillance and Information Network’ (Eumusc.Net) came to an end.

2. Research on fibromyalgia was supported by the Seventh Framework Programme for Research(1): the project Gloria(2) received an EU contribution of EUR 6 million to investigate the pathophysiology of chronic pain conditions including fibromyalgia. This project will contribute to the development of safer and more efficient drugs to treat chronic pain, and provide tools that can be used for tailoring personalised treatments. Other Seventh Framework Programme for Research projects addressing more generally chronic pain, fatigue and sleep disturbances could also be relevant to fibromyalgia. Horizon 2020, the framework Programme for Research and Innovation (2014-2020), provides further opportunities for supporting fibromyalgia research, including for better diagnostics and care. More information can be found at the Research and Innovation Participant Portal(3).

3. The Commission does not intend to initiate programmes or projects which would raise awareness or address the stigma of this disease, taking into account that health system management falls under the competence of Member States, as part of their overall responsibility for the definition of their health policies.
