Parliamentary questions
14 February 2017
Answer given by Mr Andriukaitis on behalf of the Commission

As the Commission pointed out in its reply to Written Question E-015942/2015, Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims made on foods(1) requires the Commission to set nutrient profiles for governing the use of nutrition and health claims. The issue has raised considerable political interest and has generated intense debate.

At this stage, the Commission is assessing the best possible way forward to address the objectives of regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 within its wider health policy and in view of the Commission's policies in terms of better regulation.

In that context, the Commission decided to carry out an evaluation of this regulation in its Better Regulation Communication of 19 May 2015 and published its roadmap(2). The evaluation will focus notably on nutrient profiles. A decision on the next steps will be taken once the outcome of this evaluation will be finalised.

The evaluation exercise is progressing and the outcome is expected in the first quarter of 2018.
