Parliamentary question - E-002074/2017(ASW)Parliamentary question
E-002074/2017(ASW)

Answer given by Mr Arias Cañete on behalf of the Commission

The Commission relies on the best available scientific evidence as far as any potential health risks of light bulbs, including the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), are concerned.

In 2012, the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) — composed of independent experts acting on a mandate from the Commission — published an opinion on ‘Health Effects of Artificial Light’[1], further to the Commission's request to review the adverse health effects of artificial lighting. In its opinion, the SCENIHR concluded that there is no evidence that blue light from artificial lighting (including LEDs) constitutes a risk in practice.

In 2016, the Commission requested the Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) to provide a scientific opinion focusing on potential risks to human health of LEDs. This opinion is expected to be published by June 2017. The Commission will thoroughly review the opinion once published and, depending on its conclusions, will consider any appropriate follow-up.
