Parliamentary questions
14 February 2010
Joint answer given by Mr Barroso on behalf of the Commission
Written questions : P-6374/09 , P-6404/09 , P-6405/09

In its Political Guidelines for the next Commission, the President of the Commission reiterated his strong commitment to transparency and democratic accountability and underlined the importance of empowering citizens to be involved in decisions affecting their lives, including by transparency on how they are taken, thereby confirming the importance he attaches to the European Transparency Initiative (ETI) in all its aspects.

According to the Treaty on the European Union, the President of the Commission decides on the internal organisation of the Commission, ensuring that it acts consistently, efficiently and as a collegiate body (Article 17 paragraph 6 b). In that context, and taking into account the respective background, professional experience and interests of the Commissioners-designate, the President of the Commission has asked Mr Šefčovič to be responsible for Interinstitutional relations and Administration, including the European Transparency Initiative and the further development of the register of lobbyists. Given his responsibilities for developing a smooth political cooperation with the other Institutions, and in particular the Parliament, Mr Šefčovič will be ideally placed to ensure a strong follow-up to the European Transparency Initiative.
