Parliamentary questions
6 March 2018
P-001389-18
Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 130
Tom Vandenkendelaere (PPE)

Subject:  Use of insects in animal feed
 Answer(s)

In the wake of the BSE crisis, a European ban on the use of animal protein in animal feed was introduced. Insect protein is also covered by this ban. In the meantime, the situation has changed, and every effort is being made to find alternative sources of protein for animal consumption. For example, European funding is being made available for research with the aim of obtaining protein from insects for use in animal feed.

Will the Commission shortly submit a legislative proposal to allow insect protein to be used in feed for all farm animals?
