Commercial use of Olympic facilities in Greece
18.5.2005
ORAL QUESTION H-0399/05
for Question Time at the part-session in June 2005
pursuant to Rule 109 of the Rules of Procedure
by Panagiotis Beglitis
to the Commission
The Greek Government and the Ministry for Culture have recently submitted a bill to Parliament concerning the ‘licensing’ of the 2004 Olympic facilities, amending the planning regulations to allow them to be used on a commercial basis. However, the terms of the European Investment Bank loan for the funding of the Olympic Games in Greece clearly state that the Bank must be informed of any changes regarding intended use.
In view of this, has the Greek Government submitted a copy of the bill to the Commission and is the Commission acquainted with its substance? Was the bill drawn up under some form of agreement between the Greek authorities and the Commission? Does the Commission know whether the proposed changes are accompanied by guarantees regarding environmental protection, consideration of wider public interests and provision for consultation of the local authorities and organisations representing the public?
