Civil Drones

Question for written answer E-006292-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Hugues Bayet (S&D)

In April the Commission had announced its intention to set tough new standards to regulate the operations of civil drones (or ‘remotely piloted aircraft systems’ — RPAS).

Regulation in this area is currently unclear and needs careful consideration.

For the growing popularity of this type of device raises a number of questions, in particular concerning the protection of privacy and aid for investments in enterprises specialising in the construction and development of drones.

1. What security and privacy standards will apply?2. Will this regulation take into account the protection of data and privacy and how will the Commission be able to regulate and monitor compliance with these provisions?3. The market in civil drones is booming, so European enterprises starting up in this sector should be encouraged. What does the Commission intend to do in this connection?
