State of play of EU Pilot on spent nuclear fuel of the Paks NPP in Hungary

Question for written answer E-006206-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Benedek Jávor (Verts/ALE)

In late July and early August of 2014, Hungary transported spent nuclear fuel to the nuclear reprocessing complex at Mayak in the southern Urals, Russia. The spent fuel originated from an INES 3 accident at the Paks nuclear power plant in Hungary which occurred on 10 April 2003.

As there are serious doubts concerning the legality of the shipping of spent fuel from Hungary to Russia, I submitted a complaint to the Commission, which was registered under the reference CHAP(2016)00493.

The Commission has launched an EU Pilot with a view to obtaining further information from the Hungarian government and seeking a suitable solution for the fate of the spent fuel.

1. What is the state of play of the EU Pilot?

2. What is the status of the spent fuel sent to Russia in accordance with Council Directive 2011/70/Euratom?

3. What are the possible solutions to the problem of the spent fuel?
