Abruzzo National Park is a protected Natura 2000 site (SIC IT7110205) and is being used to regenerate plant and animal species at risk of extinction, such as the Marsican brown bear.
Members of the public and environmental associations have condemned the maintenance and tarmacking work being performed on a 1.5 km-long stretch of road in the municipality of Villavallelonga (AQ) between Prati d'Angro and Fonte dell'Aceretta.
The road is being tarmacked to facilitate the construction of the Aceretta-Pescasseroli chairlift, which will cost EUR 2 million and forms part of Villavallelonga municipal council's three-year public works programme[1].
The programme also includes the construction of a wood-fired power plant which is receiving EUR 3.7 million in funding.
In the light of Directives 92/43/EEC and 2004/35/EC, can the Commission state:
- 1.whether it is aware of the case described above and whether it considers a tarmacked road and the construction of a chairlift to be in line with the regulations safeguarding protected areas;
- 2.what action it will take to remedy any damage to the environment and prevent any further damage being occasioned, and to restore the sites in this protected area to their original condition?
