The recent videos from the al-Nusra Front, showing the decapitation of a child, have been viewed around the world.
For years, specialists studying the complex situation of the forces present in the Syrian theatre of operations have been alerting us to the fact that the differences between combatant groups such as the al-Nusra Front or the Free Syrian Army and Da’esh are differences not of nature but of degree, and that all of them are, when all is said and done, radical Islamists.
Will the Commission state its position on each of these groups fighting in Syria which present themselves as ‘moderate rebels’?
Here is a list of the groups comprising Ansar al-Shariah (supporters of Islamic law):
— the al-Nusra Front,
— Ahrar al-Sham,
— the Ansar Dine Front,
— Harakat Mujahidin al-Islam,
— Liwa Ansar al-Khalifah,
— Katiba al-Tawihad Wam-Jihad,
— al-Fol al-Awal,
— Katiba Abu A'mara,
— Kataaeb Fajr al-Kilafah,
— Saraya al-Mee'ad,
— Katiba al-Shahaba,
— Jund Allah,
— Liwa Sultan al-Mirad.
