Return decisions and removal measures: to be registered in SIS or Eurodac?

Question for written answer P-006280-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Gérard Deprez (ALDE) , Louis Michel (ALDE)

In its reply to one of my recent questions (P-004844/2016) the Commission confirmed that Member States do not share information on return decisions and that it will be proposing to make it compulsory to enter this information in SIS.

Can the Commission explain why SIS is the most appropriate system for registering return decisions and other removal measures? Would not the Eurodac database, which already contains various sets of data on irregular migrants (fingerprints, photos etc.), be more appropriate?

Unlike registration in SIS, which requires the intervention of Sirene bureaux, Eurodac gives immediate access to the information needed to carry out an identity check and properly enforce a return decision. Furthermore, in the existing configuration, the box for entering the asylum request number could easily be used for entering the name of the removal measure.
