Anti-corruption measures in CETA

Question for written answer P-000197-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Fabio De Masi (GUE/NGL)

The TPP trade agreement signed by the US and Canada with countries in the Pacific region makes reference to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and mentions various preventive measures to counter the threat of corruption.

However, CETA barely touches on the problem.

1. Why is there so little stress on the fight against corruption in CETA?

2. Is it because Canada was not willing to include the subject in the text? What was the Canadian side’s attitude towards this matter?

3. The Commission announced that it would negotiate ambitious anti-corruption provisions, starting with TTIP. When and how does the Commission plan to publish these provisions in full? Alternatively, when and how does it plan to allow MEPs full access to them? Will they also cover political corruption?
