EU-China agreement: clarifications

Question for written answer P-003990-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Giovanni La Via (PPE)

The EU-China agreement, which is still being negotiated, will have a considerable impact on many industries in Europe, where the agri-food sector plays a key role in many national and regional economies. On 2 June 2017, the Commission published a list of 100 geographical indications that are set to be protected in China; it does not include a single Sicilian PGI/PDO product.

What criteria did the Commission use in drawing up this list, which includes some PGI/PDO products but not others?

Will it include top-quality Sicilian specialities, such as the Sicilian blood orange, Sicilian DOC wines, Sicilian PGI olive oil and the other PGI and PDO products from Sicily and southern Italy, among the products to be protected?
