Impact of the economic crisis on gender equality and women's rights (A7-0048/2013 - Elisabeth Morin-Chartier)

Claude Moraes (S&D), in writing. − I voted for this report because it calls on the Commission to stop budget cuts, especially in the public sector: in social benefits and social welfare, education and childcare services. The crisis has hit women disproportionately hard in the UK. In my constituency of London, living costs are higher than anywhere else in the UK, and women still bear the greatest burden of childcare and domestic care for ill or disabled family members, as well as household budgeting and care. Austerity measures have therefore hit women the hardest and they will continue to suffer for the longest, as the full extent of the assault on public services becomes clear. For this reason, I think it is more important than ever to defend services that women rely upon day in and day out.
