Kristiina Ojuland (ALDE), in writing. − Environmental protection is not only a fundamental value that we all stand for, but also an integral part of the very fabric of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. Therefore, measures taking into account environmental sensitivities must be brought into the implementation of the Unionʼs policies and activities.

Deep-sea fishing is no exception in this regard. It has been proven via numerous studies that deep-sea fishing with bottom trawls not only produces huge amount of by-catches but also leaves behind permanent damage to the whole ecosystem. Considering especially that deep-sea fish stocks and coral reefs take many decades and sometimes centuries to recover, bottom trawling makes no economic sense. But many valuable species may have already been lost due to this practice.

Therefore, since Amendments 7 and 8 to this resolution, which were to prohibit deep-sea fishing with bottom trawls, were not supported in the plenary session, I voted against the adoption of the entire resolution. Because, any resolution that does not address the issue of the destruction of deep-sea ecosystems will do nothing but distract public attention from the matter of urgent concern.
